This I believe: Annotations are important. On Canvas, I provide my students with detailed instructions/recommendations for identifying key elements of their reading. I encourage them to explain/analyze their discoveries. How does the information add to their discussion? Here I ask them to transfer their notes to the appropriate boxes on their bingo cards. Five rows. In purple, I created categories. When they can complete a row of annotations, they can yell BINGO!
Giving order to my annotations made it easier to develop a meaningful essay. Answering the questions and/or responding to the prompts pushed me to think about Amy on a deeper, more compassionate level. Many of my notes, I simply copied into my essay. Many of my notes motivated me to read more. Below I write about the toxic relationship that Amy endured with her lover Blake Fielder-Civil.
At the time Amy was writing songs for Back to Black, she was suffering through a high-strung relationship with the love of her life, Blake Fielder Civil. Her lyrics are full of grief and hardship. There was a lot of cheating and drug abuse going on. At one point, when Blake went back to his old girlfriend, Amy thought her life was over - she wanted to die. "These songs literally wrote themselves," she said. According to Amy, what saved her was her songwriting. For her, putting her feelings down on paper was CATHARTIC. It’s like Amy – or the girl in her songs – is trapped inside herself. Singing about her pain opens up her heart.
